The “Utah Jazz” is an American NBA basketball team. Originally the “New Orleans Jazz”, aptly named for its city’s rich musical history, the franchise was forced to sell in the late 1970’s due to bankruptcy. The buyer was Salt Lake City, Utah: arguably the least jazzy place in America.

The result was the spirit found in art of collage:

The epitome of Dada (a response to the horrors of WWI), Fluxus ( a similar movement in post WWII 1960’s) and the general practice made famous in painting by Robert Rauchenberg, Jasper Johns, Sigmar Polke and James Rosenquist, are just a few examples from the beginning of this modern painting phenomenon.

The supposition was simple: things that don’t originally go together sometimes do and can on an unconscious level. The whole is (or can be) better than the sum of its parts.

This new series of paintings by Gibb Slife further examines this practice and further suggests that this way of thinking has been going on since time immemorial by referencing 17th century’s trompe l’oeil painter Cornelius Gisbrechts, 18th century’s Charles La Croix and American 19th century’s John Peto , painters that undoubtedly have a direct line to contemporary painting according to Slife’s supposition. Rhythm and composition are invariably at the heart of all of the works in this exhibition; a commonality shared with the aforementioned artists.
